Books About Solo Travellers In The Us?

I am looking the titles of some books (novels or investigations) about experiences of people travelling through the US?
(I have once seen a book of an american journalist who describes the extrem poorness of working people, making the experience herself…ever heard from this experience or from this book?)

Travels with Charley – John Steinbeck Dishwasher – Pete Jordan, the second greatest book ever written about dish washing. Roughing It – Mark Twain Travels through North and South Carolina, Georgia, East and West Florida, the Cherokee Country, – William Bartram On the Road – Jack Kerouac Democracy in America – Alex de Tocqueville Just a random bunch, since there are thousands of books that would fit this question.

Bill Bryson is an extremely amusing travel writer. He approaches our country with great candor and a decidedly liberal political slant.
