A new report from Demos and U.S. PIRG gives us an insight into the post-Citizens United campaign financing system in the U.S. It’s a sad view.
According to the report, 2012 marked the first ever billion-dollar presidential campaign. With Super PACs pouring an unprecedented amount of money into campaigns, this should hardly come as a surprise. While there are many upsetting numbers and stats in the report, here is the one that best embodies the problem with Citizens United : 32 billionaires and corporations spent an average of $9.9 million each, matching the entire amount – $313 million – given by all 3.7 million “small donors” to the Obama and Romney campaigns.
