Man sentenced to 25+ years for sex crimes against young male

James William Payne III, 47, of Newton, was convicted of first degree sexual offense with a child and three counts of indecent liberties with a child Tuesday in Catawba County Criminal Superior Court.

The defendant was sentenced to no less than 300 months and no more than 369 months in the North Carolina Division of Adult Correction, according to a news release from the Catawba County District Attorney’s Office.

The defendant was also ordered lifetime registration with the North Carolina Sex Offender Registry and will be subject to satellite based monitoring upon his release from prison.

The crimes occurred in August 1994 in Catawba County and involved a male victim under the age of 13.

The crimes were reported to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 2009 and that report was forwarded to Investigator David Eckard of the Catawba County Sheriff’s Office who conducted the investigation.

Payne will be transported to the Division of Adult Correction for processing.
