Paralyzed teen needs help getting a van

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) -

Every morning 18 year holly parker depends on her brother to start her day.

He carefully and lovingly picks her up from bed…and carries her downstairs.

This June 8th Holly was in the back seat of a car with her seatbelt securely buckled.

“It was raining that night and I guess she lost control or something and the car flipped like 3 or four times,” recalls Holly.

Life would never be the same.

“It’s painful but I get through it though,” said the teen.

Since the accident, the senior at South Point in South Carolina is confined to a wheelchair, paralyzed from the neck down.

“Right now we use hoyers to get me in and out the car and it’s really frustrating on my momma,” said Holly.

Whenever she needs to leave her home Cheryl, Holly’s mom, must lift her into the car, leaving behind the chair that gives Holly control over her own mobility.

Holly Parker’s injuries were considered incomplete which means there is a chance she’ll walk again. But to get around she will need special equipment.

The family needs a special a van that would allow Holly to get into a vehicle by herself and take her power chair anywhere she needs to go.

“It’s very crucial to take her to the doctor,” said Cheryl.

After the accident money has become an issue for the family. Cheryl had to quit her job to become Holly’s full time caregiver. But her insurance just ran out.

“I’m torn because I have to go back to work in order to pay the mortgage and things,” said Cheryl.

If the family does not find a van, the plan is to drive Holly to doctor’s appointments and work their schedules around it as much as possible.

Holly however she’s staying positive.

“I want to work my way up to being back on my feet again.”

She hopes other teens on the roads don’t take driving for granted.

A new van could cost as much as $50,000 But the family is hoping to find a used van that already is converted. That could cost about $20,000.

They also need help remodeling their home to accommodate a wheelchair and Holly’s unique needs.
