Why Were The People Of North Carolina Allowed To Vote On Same-sex Marriage?

Here in the UK the law was just passed and nobody was asked! Anyone who disagreed was told to stfu.
Why can’t the US Supreme court just legalise same-sex marriages in all 50 states! Banning gay marriage is worse than banning interracial marriages!

In the USA we have what is called a democracy . One from UK may not understand what that means . This is one reason foreigners do not get to vote here

The state of North Carolina has a law that permits a citizen referendum for a state constitutional amendment. At present marriage is regulated by the states, though Congress passed a law attempting to ban any but hetero marriage (which the administration is refusing to defend in court). North Carolina and the Republican party will both take deep hits on this folly .

Because WE The People are NOT subjects to The Crown. You and yours are. Here, We decide. Not a Romanesque Parliament. One side loaded with our “titled” betters. No Queen. The issue is the re-defining of an ideal. Not Rights. You will come to see the curse your land has done to yourselves. Like Prohibition was a curse of what we asked for here. Just because we hold that the ideal for a child to be raised by Mom&Dad does not instantly mean we hate single and gay parents. It’s an ideal. Like marriage. Yin&Yang. A new beautiful whole out of two equal, yet utterly different parts.

The Tenth Amendment to US Constitution delegates those powers not reserved to the federal government to the states. The Supreme Court rules on the constitutionality of laws passed by state legislatures and the federal government. It does not make laws.

Well, there is that big problem of the First Amendment. Banning the Government establishing a religion. Marriage is a religious thing. On the other hand if the Government would establish a civil union law the problem would disappear.

Maybe it’s because we the people in NC realize God and nature trumps man made laws that are against nature and decency. At least the North Carolinians had the guts to knock down such a law.
